Bedside sonography has become one of those nearly indispensable tools of modern ICU practice for which there is no end of textbooks, journal articles and courses. Many of these resources, however, suffer from the traditional limitations of printed media and courses. Printed resources are often over-reliant on text-based explanations of what is a largely hand-eye skill. Where pictures are presented to enhance these explanations, the still image often falls short of seeing a real-time video. Sonography courses, on the other hand, allow access to the practical handling of the machine while learning the skills, but require arranging time off from the work roster and the need to travel in order to get to them. Between the course fee, travel and accommodation, they are often also fairly costly.
Both are necessary when starting off and useful for maintaining learned skills. However, the ICU Sonography: Demystifying sonology in intensive care website fills a gap quite nicely. It is run from the Division of Critical Care at the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, India by four doctors (Dr. George John, Dr. J. V. Peter, Dr. Kishore Pichamuthu and Dr. Binila Chacko), two of whom are FJFICM qualified. The site is well designed and easy to navigate. The core component is the sonography tutorials which are well written, easy to follow and liberally sprinkled with an equal mixture of still images and cine-loops that demonstrate clearly the concepts being explained. A list of the site’s contents is presented below.

The site has recently required login access, however, this is a simple registration process and is free. You are given a temporary access ID while your registration is processed, which doesn’t take long.
If you have an interest in ICU sonography, either as a beginner or to refresh aspects of its use, this is a site well worth bookmarking in your browser.
