The Short Course in Critical Infection (SCCI) is designed for the practicing intensivist and for those who manage critically ill patients.
This 2 day course provides a first principles understanding of the major infections that precipitate or complicate critical illness, as well as a focus on the practical management of scenarios that are unique to it.
Severe infections in the critically ill are a significant burden on health care systems increasing both patient morbidity and
mortality. This colloquium is organised by the Centre for Research Excellence in Critical Infection and aims to address the most important aspects of critical infection from patient care to research efforts by bringing together international and local experts from both the clinical
applied and laboratory based research areas.
Focus areas will include septic shock and opportunistic infections in the critically ill (19th), the epidemiology and evolution of antibiotic resistant populations (20th), and the ecology and genetics of antibiotic resistance (21st), with an eye on current cutting edge diagnostic
technologies.
The colloquium is run in conjunction with the annual short course which includes the sepsis day (18th-19th). The course is aimed at practicing intensivists and those who manage critically ill patients.
Faculty leaders in infectious diseases, microbiology and intensive care provide a first-principles understanding of the major infections (bacterial, viral and fungal) involved in critical illness in the ICU and immunocompromised patients, with a focus on the practical management of severe infections.
